Council repair scheme

The Heathcote County Council should do minor electrical appliance repairs and minor household installations for its consumers as a trial, its finance and administration committee agreed last evening. This follows up a recommendation by a special subcommittee set up to consider such a service.

The County Chairman, Mr W. N. Hindmarsh, said it was not intended to compete against retail businesses in any degree. “The emphasis is on the word ‘minor,’ such as elements, water-heaters, and the like,” he said. The sub-committee did not support the idea of a showroom for electrical appliances at the council offices.

It agreed however, that small electrical appliances could be left at the counter of the main county office,

and stored there before being repaired at the council's Ashgrove Terrace yard. They would then go back to the office for collection by consumers. The sub-committee also supported a limited pick-up and delivery service. It was told that present staff could

cope with the new work proposed. The committee recommended giving $lOO towards the Canterbury Promotion Council's “Let’s keep Canterbury growing,” campaign; and’ $250 towards the Canterbury Surf Life-saving Association's paid lifeguard scheme.
