N.Z. Opera in recess
PA Wellington The National Opera of New Zealand would remain in existence, but in recess, until at least March 31 next, said the chairman of the Arts Council, Miss Joan Kerr, yesterday. The situation of the company was discussed at a meeting of the Arts Council, she said. “Like many other arts organisations, the National Opera has suffered this year from the problems arising from chronic underfunding of the arts,” Miss Kerr said. The future of opera would be assessed in the new financial year in the light of the total level of funding available for the arts, she said.
