Shield challenges
Challenges for the Ranfurly Shield will close today, but already 12 rugby unions have indicated their desire to play for the prized trophy on Lancaster Park next season. Five of the challenges have come from first division teams that will have games in Christchurch on the 1983 schedule. They are Auckland. Wellington. Hawke’s Bay, North Auckland and Mahawatu. Another first division side, Otago, and the winners of the second division titles this year.
Taranaki and Southland, have also applied. The other challenges have comes from West Coast. MidCanterbury. Nelson Bays and North Otago. Under Ranfurly Shield rules, the holder must accept a minimum of seven challenges with no fewer than two from second division teams. A sub-committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union will consider the challenges next Monday, and make recommendations to the management committee.
