TV debate

Sir,—lt was noticeable in Sunday evening’s TV debate between Messrs Bolger and Douglas that, while Mr Douglas always let Mr Bolger have his turn to speak, most of Mr Douglas’s turns were terminated by interruptions by Mr Bolger. Was it that Mr Douglas was about to express some truths unpalatable to the Government? For instance, after he had referred to the wagetax trade-off talks being halted at Mr Muldoon’s telephoned instruction from overseas, that topic was then stifled for the remainder of the debate. The Government has used what it calls the unions’ rejection of the deal to justify its subsequent economic policies; it would be helpful to hear if there was another side to the story. — Yours, etc., R. HARMAN. October 13, 1982.
