Poland
Sir,—As sad as it is to see that Solidarity is now officially banned in Poland, it is interesting to observe how the people in the West have backed those in Solidarity, while at the same time trade unionists have increasingly come under attack in the West, and in this country particularly. It is rather ironical that in a country such as ours, which has been plagued with Government and union confrontations, our present Government is calling for reforms, including that of the rights of trade unions, in Poland. Why this hypocrisy in a sudden concern for others elsewhere, when, in our own society people are being disadvantaged, and hostility is growing between the various sectors of the economy? It must be hoped that eventually both. Governments will recognise the fundamental rights of all their citizens, as all peoples strive for equality and universal freedom. — Yours, etc., PETER W. KENNEDY. October 12, 1982.
