Animal week
Sir,—May I express my appreciation to your correspondent, Mrs D. G. Heard, for her letter (October 13) regarding animal abuses in our country. I wish to add the inhumane use of gin traps (which were banned in England in 1958); the
removal of stags’ horns without the use of anaesthetic in many instances, contrary to section 3, clause Y, in the Animals Protection Amendment Act of November 5. 1971; and the practices of animal husbandry “safeguarded” by ethics committees. There are numerous other barbaric exploitations of animals practised in our country, notably in the laboratories using numerous species as tools of research. I assure Mrs Heard that while it may appear only a few caring people work resolutely in various ways it is becoming obvious that the seeds of our efforts are gradually growing. — Yours, etc., NATALIE TAYLOR, Christchurch co-ordina-tor, N.Z. Anti-vioisection Society. October 14, 1982.
