International bowls to be shown live on One
When 10 international bowlers meet in Auckland on Friday to play in an international bowls contest, they will be playing for the largest purse ever offered in a bowling tournament. Although professional bowlers have been playing for money for only a few years, in this tournament they will be competing for the healthy sum of $25,000.
The players are 10 of the best bowlers in the world, and include David Bryant, from Britain “who is acknowledged as the best bowls
player the world has ever seen." said a TVNZ sports producer, Michael Scott. Some of the world-class players will be coming directly from competing in the- Commonwealth Games. The New Zealand team will consist of Phil Skoglund, Bob McDonald. Nick Unkovich and Peter Beiliss. Representing Australia will be Denis Dalton and Rob Parella, and from Britain,
David McGill (Scotland), David Corkhill (Ireland), Mai Hughes (England) and David
Bryant (England). In recent years, outdoor bowls has shed its elderly image and top bowls players now tend to be in their twenties and thirties. The familiar bowling whites have been updated too. For the ■first time in a bowling tournament, the competitors will be wearing the colours of their country, in Packerstyle uniforms, modelled after those of the cricketers — black and fawn for the
New Zealanders, and green and gold for the Australians. The tournament action
will be covered over three days. Television New Zealand's live coverage will be introduced on Friday, by Doug Armstrong, at 10 a.m. on Two.'and will last for four hours and a half. On the second day. two hours of recorded coverage will be shown on “Sport on One." and on Sunday, the semifinals will be shown live for two hours beginning at 2 p.m. on One. If it rains, play will continue.
lan Birch will be the commentator.
