City Television is a contender too
On a recent “Close Up” television interview the Minister of Broadcasting, Dr Shearer, mentioned three groups intrested in participation in private enterprise television. Two, (Northern and A.T.N.) are well known; the third is not. City Television, although less well known, is, however, certainly not a late runner in the TV stakes and had made its wish to be considered clear to both the Government and the Broadcasting Corporation even before Northern was a gleam in Michael Horton's eye, CTV says in a news release. “City Television is also particularly well qualified as a contender," it says. As part of the Video Workshop group of companies, CTV has major and sophisticated broadcast TV studio complexes in Auckland and Wellington, an existing transmission link and the only outside broadcast facility outside TVNZ. For the past
seven years, the Video Workshop group has been a profitable, successful, and major contributor to the independent production scene in New Zealand and has attracted key staff from around the world. In addition. City Television has trained local staff to a calibre described by the producer of David Frost's "Guinness Book of Records Show" (for which CTV provided the New Zealand content) as being "as good as any others he had worked G with anywhere in the world, and better than most." City Television says it has one other advantage over the other contenders for private TV, independence. “The introduction of an experienced and independent company to the television scene, without existing media connections, must surely be in the interests of the viewing public, and the future of broadcasting in New Zdealand,” CTV says.
