Council told to set tidy example

If Wairewa County residents were to be expected to tidv their properties, the council had to set an example, council members were told at their monthly meeting. Cr D. N. Cadman said that the council should be allowing for general maintenance in its annua] budget and that a works committee should be formed to take the strain off the County Clerk and the foreman.

“People walk in here and say ‘ls this a council office?’ ’’ Cr Cadman said. “We have to work out what maintenance we need because otherwise it will snowball.” Cr Cadman’s comments came after discussion on a fence which bordered the council’s yard.

"The, fence has to be fixed,” Cr E. A. Hutchinson said. Cr Cadman said that as 90 per cent of the money from ratepayers was spent on works projects, this showed the necessity of having a

works committee. In spite of considerable discussion on the need for planning and budgeting for maintenance, a motion to replace the council yard fence (the council and neighbour to pay half each) was lost, no vote being cast. Sewerage proposal A meeting will be held in early December to discover whether there is local support for a sewerage scheme if the council is granted a subsidy. A letter to the council from the Health Department said that a national evaluation of sewerage proposals was taking place and that a Wairewa proposal had been given a moderate rating. The department sought further information from the council on public attitudes towards the scheme and possible costs. Car trials An objection to the Canterbury Car Club’s holding trials in the county in November was received. A letter from Mr D. Bar-

rar, of Gebbies Pass, said that residents had had access problems for their properties during the last trials.

The chairman. Mr W. J. Thompson, said that a copy of Mr Barrar’s letter should be sent to the club, which should be warned that if any more objections were received the trial permission would be reconsidered. Cr Hutchinson said that the car club should arrange to have someone. posted at Serty gates with a ie-talkie radio so that residents had safe access. Neon sign A formal letter was required before the council could grant permission for a neon sign to be mounted on the side of the Little River Hotel, the council was told. Cr Cadman said he had been asked about a 50cm x 35cm Lion Breweries sign for the side of the building. The County Clerk, Mr W. F. Aydon, said that two signs were permitted, one on the building.
