Motorists careless at crossings
Some Lyttelton motorists are being careless at the town’s level crossings, says the Lyttelton stationmaster, Mr Wally Amer.
Mr Amer is worried that someone could be injured or killed. Two vehicles in the last year had been seriously damaged after being hit by locomotives at crossings, he said. No-one was hurt. There had also been several near misses.
"Railways staff are concerned that some day a driver may be killed or.injured by a shunting engine under their control." he said. He said that motorists should take more care. Railways staff might hot be able to stop a shunting train in time to avoid a car: Motorists were liable if a vehicle and a train collided at a crossing, said Mr Amer.
