League venue doubt
PA Wellington The venue for next Saturday's national club rugby league final is still up in the air. although Wellington officials are confident the game will be played at the Petone Recreation Ground. Petone. by edging out Auckland's Otahiihu 9-8 on Saturday, qualified for the final, where it will meet another Wellington club. Randwick. The New Zealand Rugby League had been planning to stage the final at Auckland’s Carlaw Park, with live television coverage. But the cost of taking two Wellington teams to Auckland would be an extra $lO,OOO
which makes the exercise ridiculously expensive. A Wellington league official. Mr Bernie Wood said yesterday that the final had been transferred to the Petone Recreation Ground, a view endorsed by New Zealand league secretary. Mr Ross Williams. But Mr Williams said this transfer of venue was conditional on television coverage being possible. "We owe it to the competition's sponsor. Wrangler, to ensure we get television." he said. Television New Zealand have not yet made a decision. Head of Sport for TV. Keith McEwan, said yesterday he would finalise the. matter today.
