It was travelling south when it was in collision with the northbound truck near the Te Rapa dairy factory, north of Hamilton, at 3.22. a.m. ' The occupants of the transporter, Messrs , Bob Trask and Knut Jenssen, both of Napier, who were

unhurt, said that the car was an inferno when they climbed out of the truck immediately after the crash. The two men could not get near the trapped man, and began unloading the 90 deer on board the transporter to save them from the flames. Forty deer were liberated before firemen arrived, but the deer, all pregnant hinds worth more than $lOOO each, fled the accident scene. A helicopter armed with a net launcher was brought in from Taupo to hunt them. Thirty of the animals had been recaptured by H a.m. None of the deer was injured in the accident. .
