Education top priority to boost business

Educating the community to understand how private business works and the promotion of an acceptable market economy are the main aims of the Enterprise New Zealand campaign. The promotion is organised by the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce, and this is the third time it has been held. The chairman of Enterprise New Zealand. Mr D. A. Graham, say's that there is concern about the public's lack of understanding of how business in the private sector operates. There is equal concern to promote the acceptance of a market economy as the most beneficial system

for New Zealand. This week is the culmination of the efforts of 23 provincial and metropolitan chambers ■ of commerce throughout New Zealand. Mr Graham says that it is the chambers’ conviction that the entrepreneur will lead the country out of the current recession. "The objective of the programme is to communicate the principles of an enterprise economy to as many New Zealanders as possible," Mr Graham says. "It is important to tell people what private enterprise stands for, what it has contributed in the past towards the growth and development of this country,

and what it can do in the future, given favourable conditions. “Basically, there needs to be greater encouragement to free enterprise and a lessening of Government intervention in the market-place and in Government control over spending. "If commerce is allowed to operate in a relatively free environment, then investment is encouraged, jobs created and the national wealth must improve. “This, is the message of Enterprise Week — maximum encouragement for enterprise and, with that, the promise of reward,’’ Mr Graham says.
