Eric Park leads home in Zephyr class heat
Eric Park, a former P class skipper, made a successful transition to the Zephyr class when the first heats of the Epiglass Estuary Pennants yachting series were held at the Estuary yesterday. A total of 184 yachts were sailed in 18 classes. The conditions were light, with an easterly breeze of between five and 10 knots. There were 21 entries in both the Zephyr and Laser fleets. Park led home some considerably more experienced Zephyr helmsmen, while Kevin Jamie earned line honours in the Laser section.
If the Olympic Finn division lacked big numbers, there was compensation in the quality of the placegetters. Peter Maynard won from Peter Kempkers and Phil Penney.
Robbie McGregor and Gary England took top placing in the Olympic two-man 470 class, from Barry Willcox and Gregor Bowater and Lesley Egnot and Simon Mander. The successful catamaran skippers were Gavin Walter (A class) and Craig Keenan (Paper Tiger).
