Sumner’s opening batsmen show good early form

Ideal conditions prevailed when round one of the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Association's senior A competition commenced on Saturday.

After losing the toss and being sent into bat. Sumner started the new season in grand style when Ray Steele (67) and’ Roydon McLeod (42) combined for a 110run opening partnership. It was a pity that the following batsmen could not capitalise on the situation. A good spell of bowling from Mike Hogan, who took tour for 48. saw Sumner lose its next four wickets for a handful of runs to be 148 for five when the skipper. Roger Campbell. declared.

Christchurch WMC in its visit to the crease succumbed to the bowling of Dave Saunders who bowled well throughout for his six for 32.

Bad light stopped play 15 minutes early at St James Park, with Woolston WMC in a commanding position in its match with Harewood.

After being two for four. Woolston WMC recovered to reach 153 before declaring with eight wickets down. Bob Kerr (42) and Bruce Jenkins (25) led the battle for runs and when Jenkins was run out. Graham Barrett continued in similar vein.

Bowling for Harewood. Paul Case finished with four for 42. In reply. Harewood was 105 for

eight at the end of play. Only John Adams (35) was able to withstand the Woolston WMC attack; Dave Quested was the most successful bowler with three for 17.

Batting first after losing the toss. Merivale-Papanui was soon in trouble losing both openers with its score on 22. Eventually the total reached 168. largely due to the batting of Ken Stagg (67). who displayed a fine array of shots all round the wicket.

For Upper Riccarton, Terry Caldwell and Graham Eggerton shared the wickets with four apiece. Upper Riccarton set about the chse for runs in a satisfactory manner and when stumps were drawn, had 151 runs on the board with Dave Kennedy 39 not out.

At Sheldon Park, both Hoon Hay and Belfast suffered from the long outfield and runs were hard to get. Belfast batted first and early in its innings lost its first five wickets for 58 runs. Only a rearguard action from Bill’ Davison (52) and Roger Taylor (26) saved Belfast from complete rout. As usual. Tony Pugh and Jim Bennie led the fioon Hay attack to finish with four and three wickets respectively. Hoon Hay in reply was 58 for three at stumps. Two centuries were scored on the opening day and these went to A. Wilson (New Brighton third

A) with 119 not out and G. Smith (WWMC third G) with 102 not out.

In the bowling. J. Bell (Upper Riccarton second grade) collected nine wickets for a cost of 33 runs. In the third E grade, both J. Nicoll (United) and B. Avery (Addington) achieved hattricks.
