Sir Alexander to stay on
The retiring chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation, the New Zea-land-born Sir Alexander Ross, is remaining in Australia. While other senior games officials packed and prepared to leave Brisbane yesterday, Sir Alexander said he was looking for a house to buy. probably in Queensland. He sold his house in London, where he has lived since 1956, before the Games and it was always his intention, he said, to stay in Australia when he retired as chairman
of the federation. "We were always going to retire somewhere in this part of the world,” he said, “and Australia was a logical place because my wife. Cynthia, is from Adelaide. The climate is good and it seems a comfortable. place to live.” New Zealand had been considered for retirement, he said, but his wife’s Australian links decided the issue. Sir Alexander, aged 75. moved to London after he had finished as deputy governor of the Reserve Bank in New Zealand. He had rnwed
for New Zealand at the first Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1930 and managed the New Zealand team at the Vancouver Games in 1954. He took over as chairman of the Games Federation in 1966 from another New Zealander. Lord Porritt, and said in Edmonton four years ago that the Brisbane Games would be his last. A Scot.
