South African policies
Sir,—Statements made in “The Press" by New Zealanders returning from all-ex-penses-paid tours of South Africa, implying that important changes have been made in the dismantling of apartheid are, unfortunately, the exact opposite of the truth. Grand apartheid, i.e. the movement of the black population to socalled homelands, is being speeded up. The advantages to white South Africa are great. Externally South Africa will be able to point to a politically independent series of "homelands.” Internally the “homelands” will supply cheap labour for the whites-only Republic because of the almost total lack of employment in their own “countries." The South African Consul should be sent packing in protest against the violent and oppressive policies of his Government. — Yours, etc.,
GRAEME YARDLEY. October 8. 1982.
