Waiau railway for tourists?

Parliamentary reporter The Railways Corporation planned to retain part of the former Waiau branch line long enough to allow a local group to investigate the feasibility of setting up a tourist railway venture, the Minister of Transport. Mr Gair, has told Parliament.

In a written reply to a question by Mr M. K. Moore (Lab.. Papanui). Mr Gair said 'a local committee had been set up and was considering reopening the railway line from Waipara to Waikari and Hawarden as a tourist attraction.

Railway officials had helped the group with inquiries about the project and would continue to be available for consultation, he said.
