Plant breeder protection

Parliamentary reporter The Government intended to introduce a bill this year to give protection to new plant varieties between the time the breeder applied for rights and when they were granted, the Minister of Agriculture. Mr Maclntyre, has told Parliament. Replying to a question by Sir Basil Arthur (Lab.. Timaru). Mr Maclntyre said the Plant Varieties Bill. 1982. would be introduced this session at the request of plant breeders. Under present legislation, interim protection was available if an application was made and a fee paid. Under the new bill, a new plant variety would receive interim protection as soon a an application for rights was accepted by the plant varieties office, without the payment of a fee. The bill would make the administration of plant rights easier. It would also give more strength to the holders of rights for fruit trees and ornamentals bred for fruit and out-flower production.
