Senate snag on Pacific treaties
NZPA Washington Treaties under which the United States renounces his-
torical claims to Tokelau, the Cook Islands. Kiribati, and Tuvalu failed to come up for consideration by the Senate on Friday — the last day of the session — although it sat till the early hours of Saturday. Earlier attempts to introduce the treaties solhe Senate could advise President Reagan to ratify them foundered under Right-wing opposition from, senators op-, posed to any form of renun-
ciation of claims. They have recalled the American military use of Pacific Islands in World War 11.
The treaties will now have to be introduced during the next session, which begins on November 29. providing opposition is overcome. Ratification is supported by the Administration, and few problems are seen in getting the treaties through the Senate once they are introduced — even with “no" votes from some senators — but agreement to bring matters up on the floor must be unanimous. «
