Awards for brave rescue
PA Wellington Mrs Sonia Harrison and her policeman husband, Mr Bruce Harrison, were’ awarded Royal Humane Society bronze medals for rescuing a young man caught in a tidal rip at the mouth of the Rangitikei River in January, 1981. Mrs Harrison said that a television advertisement showing how a car tyre could be used as a lifebuoy saved the life of one of two men caught by the rip.
Her husband dived into the metre-high surf to reach the only ,man who was able to stay afloat.
Mrs Harrison remembered the television film, borrowed a spare tyre, and plunged in after them. By the time she reached her husband, both he and the man he was saving were exhausted and were being swept out to sea.
