Islington discharge
An application by Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating. Ltd. to discharge effluent from its Islington works has been approved by a standing tribunal of the North Canterbury Catchment Board. • The tribunal's recommendations to the board have been tabled at a meeting of the board's resource committee. The tribunal said the company should be granted a right to discharge pelt processing effluent on a 26ha area of gravel flats southwest of Halswell Junction Road and the Main South
Road. The- .company would have the fight to discharge up to 1000 cubic-metres a day two days a week, and in emergencies. •_ ' ■ •; ' ■ When the application was heard' last month the company submitted.,,., that the future of the Islington works depended on its being granted. Closing was the only option if it was declined. In its conclusions, the tribunal noted a significant reduction in the volume and pollutant loading of the discharge since the last right was granted.
