Cleared of tax fraud allegation
NZPA Canberra A leading businessman appointed by the Australian Government to review civil service handling of a series of scandals has been cleared of allegations that he was involved in tax fraud, the Treasurer. Mr John Howard, said. Mr Howard said. that the Commissioner of Taxation had vetted Mr John Reid’s tax files and found there was. nothing to substantiate the allegations made in Parliament by the Opposition Labour Party leader, Mr Bill Hayden. Mr Hayden alleged that Mr Reid, a director of Australia’s biggest company, B.H.P. and vice-chairman of the national airline, Qantas, was a director of four companies sold 'to a leading participant in tax evasion schemes.
