Crucial Games meeting today
PA Brisbane African nations have been quiet on what attitude they will adopt at today’s crucial special meeting of the Commonwealth Games Federation.
Delegates from each of the African teams met in the Games- village for more than two hours yesterday but a spokesman, Dr Abraham Ordia, would only say later that they were “completely one” on the big issues. Today’s meeting, called by the federation’s chairman, Sir Alexander Ross, after suggestions by some African States, will; thrash out the. difference between New Zea.land and the, rest of the Commonwealth on a sports, code of conduct. Whatever decision is -reached must be. formally ratified at. the federation’s general assembly on October
Yesterday’s' meeting of
African nations was also attended by Mr Sam Ramsamy, chairman of the Lon-don-based South African Non-racial Olympic Committee.
New Zealand’s Games' Association chairman, Mr Roy Dutton, intends to speak early at today’s meeting to explain the New Zealand position on the code. It sees it as unneessary because the association has already pledged its support of the'Gleneagles Agreement: New Zealand dislikes .the provision outside of however, that Games Associations could be held responsible for the actions of outside bodies. ?■'•'
