Taxpayers ‘surprise’ department

PA , Wellington The Commissioner of Inland Revenue. Mr John Simcock, has said that he had been “pleasantly surprised" by the level of co-operation shown by taxpayers who had already filled in their new tax code forms. The new rates, announced in the Budget, will come into effect on October 1.

With taxpayers now being required to put their tax code numbers on their IRl2s there had been a heavy demand for help information; in recent weeks as many as 13.000 people had been calling the 27 district tax offices each day asking for their tax code numbers, Mr Simcock said. To handle the extra work the Inland Revenue Department was allocated an extra $250,000 to hire . temporary staff.

The change in rates of tax and rebates coming half-way through the tax year would make next year’s tax returns more complicated than before, said Mr Simcock.

“We have got to provide for all the rebates in force for the first six months as well as providing for the new rebates in force for the second, six months.

“I am-expecting, however, that will not be longer than the six-pages we had for this year's returns.” he said...
