The New Zealand swimming squad has quickly settled into life at the Games Village, and training at the impressive Chandler pool, and its chief coach, Mr Bert Cotterill, is delighted with the squad's progress. Every swimmer has been producing encouraging times in training. Included among them is the Christchurch trio, Grant Forbes, Kim Dewar and Melanie Jones.
Training yesterday morning, Miss Jbnes reeled off a 2UOm backstroke in 2min 21sec, a second outside her personal best. That is the type of time that has the New Zealanders quietly confident of causing some surprises when the swimming competition starts on Friday. The team took a day to settle after a harrowing journey from New Zealand. For the Auckland members of the team it was 14 hours after leaving Auckland before they arrived in the Games Village. The training is winding down now, and tomorrow afternoon there-, will be a series of trials to determine the personnel: for the women’s 100 m freestyle and the men’s 200 m freestyle reJay. ■. .■ '•
