Attemped burglaries
A second attempt in two days to burgle post offices in Mid-Canterbury failed early on Saturday morning. An alarm was set off at the Methven Post Office at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday after the office had been broken into and attempts had been made to open the safe. Nothing was stolen. Overnight on Thursday a
rear window of the Tinwald Post Office was forced. Explosives 'were used in an attempt to open the safe there but the explosion resulted only in the safe door being jammed shut. The office was closed to the public most of Friday morning while police, and Post office officials investigated.
