Goal deluge in Division One soccer
NZPA London The English Footbal) League champion, Liverpool, stormed to the top of the Division One when it crushed struggling Southampton, 5-0, on Saturday. • Liverpool’s sweeping success on a day which produced 50 goals' in 11 Division One games pushed Manchester United into second place, after its 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

which plunged to the bottom of the table. Liverpool has 17 points and Manchester United 16, while Watford sustained the flying start to its top grade debut with an 8-0 victory over Sunderland, keeping it in third place on 15 points.
Watford routed mid-table Sunderland with a four-goal burst from Luther Blissett, and two each by Nigel Callaghan and Ross Jenkins.
West Ham, which trounced Manchester City 4-1, climbed from sixth to fourth.
Tottenham took charge against Nottingham Forest with two first-half goals by Gary Mabbutt and one by Garth Crooks. Garry Birtle's
reduced the deficit just before the interval but a late goal by Crooks sealed victory. Resurgent Stoke, which finished 18th in the division last season, salvaged a point when Bren O’Callaghan equalised in the 85th minute to force a 4-4 draw with Luton. Rangers gained its first victory at Aberdeen Since the Scottish Premier Division was formed seven years ago, but it had to struggle for a 21 success. Striker Derek Johnstone
put Rangers ahead soon after half-time and Swedish international Robert Prytz extended the lead. The World Cup player Gordon Strachan scored from a penalty 10 minutes from the end.
