Gallant Colts team outplayed, 36-6
Canterbury B held too many guns, both forward and back, for a gallant Canterbury Colts team in the early curtain-raiser at Lancaster Park on Saturday, and the older, more . experienced team cruised to a 36-6 win. With its tight forwards dominating the set pieces, its loose forwards providing a steady stream of second-phase posses’sion. and with Peter McLaren in rampaging form with the ball in hand. Canterbury B had control of the match throughout. lan Mather ran powerfully from the left wing, David Farrant was in timely support in the first half, and by the end of the match Canterbury B had scored five good tries through the backs. Steve Baker added two further tries through his own efforts
from the base of the scrum. There were players in the Colts’ team, however, who did their youthful reputations no harm. Deane McKinnel showed a range of talents when he shifted to full-back in the second half, and Dean Kilworth made the most of his chances on the right wing. Kilworth created the Colts consolation try. two minutes from the finish, with a fine run out of defence. For Canterbury B. tries were scored by Farraht (2). Baker (2). Wayne Burleigh, Mather, and Brent Winks. Steve Hansen kicked four conversions. Andrew Cartwright scored the Colts try. Colin Williamson, a half-time replacement, converted it.
