Irish migrant scheme still on
Parliamentary reporter
A scheme to allow young Northern Ireland residents to emigrate to New Zealand had not closed, but had had no attention for several years, the Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, has told Parliament.
Mr Muldoon had been asked by Mr M. K. Moore (Lab., Papanui) if the Government had made any arrangements to accept people from Northern Ireland whose safety was threatened because they had informed the authorities about the activities of the Irish Republican Army. In a written reply, Mr Muldoon said the Government had instituted a scheme in March. 1977, under which some young former detainees from Northern Ireland were allowed to emigrate to New Zealand. The scheme was small and non-sectarian. It was carried out without publicity to protect those involved.
In the end, only a very small number of people had settled in New Zealand, Mr Muldoon said.
