Man faces manslaughter charge
. A man appeared on a charge of manslaughter before Judge Laing in the District Court yesterday. Joe Taiapa, represented by Mr D. C. Fitzgibbon, was remanded in custody to September 29.
It is alleged that he assaulted Yvonne Rose Mariu on Tuesday. She died in Christchurch Hospital yesterday morning. In applying for bail, Mr Fitzgibbon said that the charge arose out of a domestic dispute. His client had not known the woman had died until just before he appeared in court.
Substantial sureties were available, said Mr Fitzgibbon.
Bail was opposed by Sergeant M. J. South because of the seriousness of the alleged offence. Manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment.
Earlier this week, Taiapa, aged 26, unemployed, faced a charge of assaulting the woman.
The assault charge was withdrawn yesterday, and the charge of manslaughter laid.
