First music week
New Zealand's first national music week will be observed from October 1 to 10 this year. The acting chairman of the National Music. Council of New Zealand. Mr Bernie Darby, said that an international music day has been marked in the past by special programmes of New Zealand music on Radio New Zealand's concert programme. • The national music council had decided to expand this activity, into a week-long
music festival. Performances of jazz, rock, country and western and classical music will be given throughout the week, up and down the country. Orchestras, jazz and rock bands, choirs, brass bands, small instrumental groups, individual singers and instrumentalists will take part. Radio New Zealand’s stations will broadcast special programmes throughout the week, as will independent radio stations. Television New Zealand
will present a national music week feature on “Kaleidoscope" and other special items. Just before and just after music week there will be two major award presentations. The annual Apra Silver Scroll for best original New Zealand popular song will be made on September 17 and on October 11 the Recording Industry of New Zealand Awards will be held for achievements in creative work in the industry. •
