Injection for tree
An old London plane tree in Cranmer Square is being injected with a fungicide through special capsules and feeder tubes (pictured). It is planned to see if the Ameri-can-designed system is effective against a fungus disease which has plagued Christchurch plane trees for about 10 years. The chemical will travel through the tree’s entire system, and is being injected just before the leaves burst from their buds. Mr Walter Fielding-Cotterell. the City Counncil's tree expert. said that an injection experiment last year had been done halfway through the growing season, when the fungus had already attacked the leaves. Although the leaves became healthy again, so did leaves on other London plane trees that had not had treatament, and so the experimmenl was inconclusive.
