The first of the United States Navy’s Aegis class guided missile cruisers, the Ticonderoga, undergoing sea trials in. the Gulf of Mexico. The ship has been criticised for being so heavy that it cannot keep up with the aircraft carriers it is supposed to protect and for carrying so much equipment that it is unstable. The Navy acknowledges that the Ticonderoga is heavier than its designers planned but says it is happy with the ship.
