Carpet stores close
PA Wellington Nine Wellington carpet stores of an Australianowned chain, Carpet Calls, Ltd, have been closed down. Branch managers at seven of the outlets were told of the closings at a meeting on Friday. Stock was removed from many of their stores the next morning. Two other stores had earlier been shut by the company. Each of the stores
employed two persons, and negotiations for redundancy pay are under way. About six months ago the chain closed its South Island shops — understood .to number at least 20. Many of them were taken over by the employees who had been working for Carpet Calls. Since then, further closings have occurred at Levin, Palmerston North, New. Plymouth, Taupo. Wanganui, Rotorua, and Dannevirke.
