Smell-problem progress

Progress on reducing smells at the Christchurch sewage-treatment works was being made, but it was too soon to say when the problem would be solved, said the Christchurch Drainage Board's chief engineer. Mr H. P. Hunt.

Work done so far included identifying smelly compounds, and making a start on finding ways to destroy them, he said. Ozone was being tried to see if it was a suitable agent to destroy odorous compounds in either the gaseous

or liquid phases. This experimental work should be finished in four to six weeks. Even if ozone proved effective. much work would still be needed to convert this knowledge to a suitable treatment system, said Mr Hunt.
