Teacher wins quiz contest
PA Wellington A Wainuiomata Colleges schoolteacher, Simon Smith, became this year's "Mastermind" winner on Saturday evening.
Mr Smith, aged 33. beat three other finalists. His specialist subject is the life and reign of Napoleon 111. He said he was persuaded to become a Mastermind contestant after his brother entered the contest two years ago and reached the semi-finals. He chose his subject because he had been interested in it since secondary school.
Mr Smith leaches English, social studies, and history at the Wellington secondary school, and is also the school's coach for the school Television quiz ..’show. "It's Academic."
Mr Smith, whose family live in Waiau, went to Christ's College, He later graduated M.A. from the University of Canterbury.
