Geraldine grenades a danger

Timaru reporter

For the second time within a year, Constable Warren Barker, of Geraldine, has been called on io handle live grenades which are capable of blowing up a small building or killing someone. A British Mills grenade, a Japanese hand grenade, and an artillary fuse were found in a shed behind a Geraldine house on the second occasion.

They had obviously been kept and treasured as war souvenirs but were lethal, particularly in the hands of children. Constable Barker removed the grenades and called on an Army officer from Christchurch to take them back to Burnham Military Camp for disposal. The officer said that the British grenade still had its pin in place and the Japanese grenade a plug in place. Both were capable of doing a great deal of damage.
