Wharenui’s ‘winners’ feted

The Canterbury rugby team were not the only sportsmen being honoured on Saturday evening. The Wharenui Swimming Club, at a special dinner, paid tribute to a number of club members who have represented New Zealand in various teams in the last few months.

Three of the club's swimmers - .Grant Forbes, Melanie Jones and Kim Dewar, and the club coach, Clive Power - are part of the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team which leaves tomorrow for Brisbane. Three other senior swimmers. Grant Gillard. Andrew O'Donoghue and

Jennifer Queen, were part of a national team at the recent Queensland winter swimming championships, and the club had four players in the New Zealand water-polo team at the world championships in Ecuador last month. They were Nigel Ward, John Koens, Gary Campbell and Richard Clark.

Campbell and Clark, still in their mid-20s, were made life members of the club at the annual meeting earlier this year. The criterion for life membership is 21 years continuous service with the club.

Five swimmers — Shane Ellison. Michael Bouwmeester. Craig Watson. Kirsten Mclntosh and Susan Willis

were in the New Zealand Pacific school games team earlier this month, and Janice Murdoch has just completed a . tour of Great Britain with the New Zealand surf life saving team. Roly Creighton, who last week set a world paraplegic swimming record and who will represent New Zealand at the Asian and Pacific Games in Hong Kong next month, was presented with the Binning Cup. Donated by Bob and Maxine Binning, former members of the club, the Cup is awarded to the club member •with the most notable achievement during the year. Roly had also broken a world record at Easter Week-end.
