Maori gangs finished
PA Wellington Maori gangs are finished, said the Secretary of Maori Affairs. Mr Kara Puketapu. The "new environment" which finished the gangs, he said, was represented by the clear options available to young Maoris such as preemployment courses, the kokiri units, and the stand taken by the Maori community. This and Tu tangata (stand tall) were paying off. “You will still see the odd gang, but they are on a fast downward track because of the new stance the Maori has
taken," said Mr Puketapu. The Maori people were now better organised and were into “a whole new ball game." he said. They had taken a definite stand ’on the gang phenomenon and against the behaviour of the gangs, and were determined there would not be a return to that behaviour. Mr Puketapu made these comments when asked if there was any update on the situation since March which is covered in his annual report to Parliament, just tabled.
