Judge’s daughter salutes dad for first time

Another first in racing? A daughter, as the successful race rider, saluted her father, the official judge, after Chapel Guard won the Timaru Racing Club’s second Twizel Maiden at Washdyke on Saturday, The Timaru Racing Club’s judge is Mr Hilaire Ford, who took up judging after he recovered from serious injuries received in a race fall.
His daughter Hillary was Chapel Guard’s successful partner in the second leg of the T.A.B. treble on Saturday. This was Hillary Ford’s fourth success as a race rider, but her father was not officiating when she kicked
her three previous winners home.
In. fact he did not see Hillary in her previous wins.
Hillary Ford is indentured to Joe Shaw, at Riccarton, and her successful mount on Saturday was a runner for the Shaw stable.
The five-year-old Kirrama gelding did not place great strain on the judge's eye. His powerful finish under hands-and-heels urgings from his young rider gave him victory by half a length over the win favourite, Dulcia.
• Chapel Guard is' raced in partnership by Messrs Pat McGloin and Bill Quirk, who bred her from Guardian Angel, a daughter of Lomond. Guardian Angel had a twisted leg. and was unraced,
but her dam Blonde Sprite was C.J.C. Welcome Stakes winner.
Chapel Guard came under the attention of a visiting Sydney trainer last month and an offer of $30,000 was in the wind until the would-be buyer discovered the gelding was a five-year-old.
If he had been a year younger Chapel Guard would have probably landed up in Australia, and there would have been no such unusual family situation that supplied one of the highlights at Washdyke on Saturday. Peter Jones, another Riccarton trainer, came up with the winners of the two other legs of the T.A.B. treble on Saturday.
Silver Print was a comfortable winner of the first
leg. the Strathconan Stud Handicap, and Third Degree eclipsed the others in the third leg. the President's Handicap. Mr George Hutton, of Darfield, owns Silver Print, and races Third Degree in partnership with Messrs ,G. E. J. Hutton and T.E.C. Saunders. Before Silver Print and Third Degree made their contributions, Silver Gale, another member of Peter
Jones’s stable, won the Satterthwaite Maiden in the hands of Jim Collett, who also partnered Third Degree. Treacle, a fourth runner for the Jones stable, was one of the best-backed horses in the Charles Halstead Handicap. but faded fast from a trailing position and finished well down the field.
