Car carriers visit Auckland
Car-carrying vessels are becoming regular visitors at. the Port of Auckland. Three of the vessels have called already this year and another three are expected before December.
The latest to call at Auckland was the Olympus Ace. a roll-on car carrier from Japan. With her massive block-like shape and square bow, the ship was designed as a huge floating carpark. Though she unloaded only 116 vehicles at Auckland, including cars and tractors, the Olympus Ace can carry 5539 car units. She has 13 decks, one of which can be raised almost two metres to allow for larger vehicles such as harvesters or excavators.
The ship has three ramps on the starboard side, one amidships. one aft. and one on the quarter. Built two years ago. the Olympus Ace usually carries Datsun cars from Japan to the United Slates.
