Overseas meat markets

Because of warmer weather and lower prices for domestic lamb, there was little demand for New Zealand lamb last week on UK wholesale markets, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board in its weekly market survey. Although there is not now a total ban by France on lamb imports from Britain, fears of lamb being impounded for hormone tests has effectively reduced the trade to a trickle. On Smithfield market New Zealand PL grade lamb was quoted at 57.5-59 p per lb and PM grade 56.0-59.0 p per lb.

Prices for imported manufacturing beef were generally firmer in the United States, apparently as a consequence of the latest import restrictions. The imminent scarcity factor for imported beef was. however, offset to some extent by the continuing fall in prices for domestic beef. New Zealand cow beef averaged 105 US cents per lb. c.i.f.. the same as the previous week, and bull beef rose to 116 US cents per lb. The Japanese mutton market was again inactive last week, with no sales reported from New Zealand.
