Cook Is air fares to rise 22 p.c.
PA Auckland Air fares between New Zealand and the Cook Islands will rise more than 22 per cent during the next six months. Air New Zealand has announced that approval had been obtained for the increase, to be introduced in three stages. On October 1 air fares between the two countries will rise 7 x 'z. per cent. On January 1 there will be a
similar increase, and then a further 7‘a per cent rise on April 1. Air New Zealand's head of market development (international), Mr N. R. Searle, said the route had been losing money for some time. The airline was no longer prepared to sustain such losses, particularly when it intended to introduce Boeing 747 s on the route. The one-way economy fare, at present $424, will
rise to 5528 on April 1. ■ The Government yesterday - approved an International * Air Transport Association request for a 7 per cent in- . crease on most other fares ’( out of New Zealand. Routes exempt from the .7 increase include those to Singapore, Hong Kong. Papua New Guinea, and , Tokyo. The epic fare between Auckland and London has been, increased 2 per cent.
