N.Z. seventh in golf championship

NZPA special corespondent Lausanne The Auckland golfer. Philip Aickin. scored a brilliant final round four-under-par 68 to help New Zealand into seventh place in the Eisenhower Troph.v world team championship which ended in Lausanne at the week-end. The championship, played aver the narrow Lausanne course, was won by the United States with a total of 859. seven shots clear of Sweden and Japan, with France and Taiwan filling out the top five. South Africa was sixth on 879. two shots ahead of New Zealand.

The New Zealand side had their best day of the week thanks to Aickin's score, returning a total of 216. with Mike Barltrop's 73. and 75 from Greg Turner counting as well. For the third consecutive round there was no contribution from Colin Taylor who shot 78. Aickin. aged 21. had an individual total of 288 to tie for sixth, only four behind the best performer. Argentina's Louis Carbonetti. a 30-ycar-old law student. The Aucklander set up his good score with five birdies in the first nine, four of them in the stretch from the fifth

to the ninth, and he turned in 32. Yet another birdie at the short eleventh, which was his third two of the round, put him five under and in sight of a course record. Mistakes then set in as the pressure increased and he dropped shots at the next two holes.

He held on bravely though, clinching his final birdie at the fifteenth.

"Philip has really improved since going to Oklahoma University." Barltrop said.

"He’s so much more of a solid player now than he ever was back in New Zealand. He's rid himself of his

loose shots." Barltrop had reason to feel pleased with his play as well, because after turning in a miserable 39. he produced three birdies on the back nine to return in 34.

Turner was going sweetly before running up a seven at the switchback par-five thirteenth. a hole which caught him out early in the week. He had played the first nine in 36.

The New Zealand selector. Jim Treacy. also an administrative committee member of the World Amateur Golf Council, said afterwards that New Zealand golf was falling behind the European nations.

' With all the money they are pouring into golf on the continent they are producing more good players, and I think it's up to our Government to do something similar to keep pace." he said.
