Arthur’s Pass service

Sir,—l have noticed with interest recent comments by the district traffic manager of the Railways about the Christ-church-Greymouth railcar service, and notably his reply to Mr D. G. Stove (August 30, 1982) to the effect that the daytime services will not be reduced. Then on September 3 he states that the evening service during the week may be cancelled from lack of patronage. This may be because people are tired of arriving at their destination half to one and a half hours late. This has been happening regularly over the last months, Friday evening being particularly bad. I realise there is work being carried out on the track but a passenger service should run to within seconds of its timetable. Also, the condition of the Arthur’s Pass station is a disgrace — the windows have not been cleaned for the last two years. Who is responsible for cleaning the building?—Yours, etc.,

JUDY CHARLES. Arthur’s Pass. September 16, 1982.
