Kingston Flyer

Sir,—A very interesting item (“The Press,” September 11) regarding the Kingston Flyer. As the original Kingston Flyer ran to Kingston (Lake Wakatipu) then our present one should too. How can a train be the Kingston Flyer if it is not in the vicinity of Kingston. It is a wonderful train given to New Zealand, tourism by the efforts of Mr J. B. Gordon and the Railways General Manager of the day, Mr Ivan Thomas. Of course it cost dollars to refurbish — something like $49,000 for locos and $70,000 plus for the carriages. Also the track received a good deal of maintenance so it was nothing short of sacrilege on the Government’s part to allow the venture to get to the stage when the track or rads fell into disrepair. I hope that the whole train c.an be returned to the Lake Wakatipu srea, even though I would have liked to see it run maybe between Ferrymead and Lyttelton or better still on the old Waiau branch.—Yours, etc., R. ROWE. September 17. 1982.
