said. Last year, it cost $3.1 million to administer School Certificate, and parents paid $2.5 million in examination fees. That compared with the $582,000 it cost to run in 1972, when candidates’ fees covered $490,000 of the expense. “The biggest cost is the fees for those who mark the examination,” Mr Richard said. “There are about 1100 markers, and we have also to
pay for printing papers, postage, and supervisors’ fees.” This year, candidates have to pay $7 entrance fee plus $7 for each subject they sit, compared with $6 last year and $5 in .1980. Mr Richard said there was provision for parents to be exempt fees in cases of hardship. This had been granted to 1500 cases last vear. “We . have not had many complaints about the high price of the fees.” he said.
