NZPA Buenos Aires Argentina and Britain had agreed to lift financial restrictions imposed against each other during the Falkland Islands conflict, the Economy Ministry in Buenos Aires said yesterday. The Economy Minister, Mr Jorge Wehbe, “has ordered the lifting of financial restrictions and has instructed the central bank of the Argentine Republic to implement the pertinent measures, in accordance with international banking practices.”
In London the British Treasury confirmed that Britain had lifted the restrictions against Argentina with effect from 11 a.m. yesterday in response to a similar move by Argentina starting at the same time. The Economy Ministry emphasised that the step was limited to “financial” restreitions, and “does not alter other measures that will remain in full effect.” Ministry and other Government sources in Buenos Aires earlier said that the delay in lifting the curbs was because the move would have had to be approved by the ruling three-man military junta, which had yet to agree on how to do it.
