Thosada Rose surprises
Special correspondent Hastings The veteran 51-year-old jockey, Bill Skelton, and Thosada ’ Rose combined in a shock result to win the $12,600 Gold Trail Stakes, the first race in the Wrightson filly of the Year series, at Hastings yesterday. Skelton, who numbered his fourth win in the race, bounced Thosada Rose (the tenth favourite) out brilliantly and she never looked like surrendering, in spite of being challenged by Cariere, ridden by Jim Cassidy, shortly after turning for home.' The Namnan—Street Rose
filly raced for most of her juvenile career in the care of Ray Morgan, but when that trainer decided to give it away after guiding the filly to a brace of wins, Thosada Rose was entrusted into the care of Michael Lange, a local at Hastings. Lange’s success rate in a short career has been good, notably with Thrust, Tallboy, Kissenger, and Sartanga'i, Lange paraded Thosada Rose to get third in the trials here last week. When she came back to scale, his hopes were not high, and the filly surprised her, connections yesterday, in only her second “race start from Lange’s stable.
Thosada Rose has been reluctant to jump from the gates for most riders, but from No. 1 at the barrier, Skelton bounced her out a length better than anything else, and she held on to win by half a length. Only when Cariere put her head in front at the. straight entrance was the issue in doubt. Skelton was unworried. "Every time I asked her for she gave me a little more. She was most impressive." Thosada Rose. Lange said, will run next in the Lowland Stakes at Masterton. The favourite. Beaufort Lass, was fifth. She was soon handy from her wide draw, but became unbalanced on the turn and was soon struggling from that point.:
